Our Idea

My group and I finally came up with a solid idea for our short film and I really like the idea so far. We decided to give our film a really huge plot twist. Our story is going to be about a lonely girl who finds comfort in a doll she's had since she was a young girl and she always has the doll close with her. The girl then notices that the doll isn't in the place she left it and it's being misplaced, so we're gonna make it look like the doll is haunted. Our plot twist is going to be that the doll ends up being a girl that our main character has been holding hostage. I think it would be a good idea to have our main character eventually destroy the doll, but in reality she is actually killing the girl that she's been holding hostage. I think we can show this without having to actually show a dead body, we can show close ups of blood and maybe a hand or leg covered in it. I think we're going to leave subtle hints throughout the film that indicate that the main character is holding someone hostage.

I think we can show the subtle hints by having rope in the background of a scene or filming a shot of a door with a lock on it. An obstacle that we have for this is getting a doll for the film. We're probably going to have to buy a doll because none of us have creepy looking dolls, but we might go to good will to look for one. The movie May kind of inspired me for this idea because it's about a girl who can't seem to find any true friends so she considers a doll her mom gave her to be her one true friend and eventually she recreates the doll in a very sinister way. I really like our idea and I'm excited to develop our story more.

Brainstorming!

Today in class I was able to talk with my partners, Joanne and Kylie, and we finally put all of our thoughts together and decided what type of plot we want our short film to be about. Throughout our conversation we kept bringing up the movie Get Out because we want to make a short film that centers around a social issue while still being a thriller. Get Out is a thriller that presents a social issue involving how black people are treated in our world. As we kept discussing ideas we decided that we also want our short film to be about trusting someone and then having that person turn out to be someone completely different than who you thought they were. This is another aspect of Get Out that is inspiring us because in Get Out there is a plot twist about one of the main characters and the plot twist adds a shock factor that we want for our film.

We were talking about how this concept could work in a family because everyone usually trusts their parents or siblings, so what if your parents or siblings aren't who you actually think they are? We think this concept can work really well and would really shock our viewers. We were also talking about how we could maybe use Kylie and her twin sister Taylor for this idea, or maybe we can make the story about a couple and one of the partners in the relationship is abusive, but that's not revealed until the end of the film. I like the idea of leaving little clues throughout the film to hint that someone isn't how they actually say they are and then at the end it's revealed who they really are. I think we have a really good idea and I'm excited to fully develop it!

Ideas

Since my group is probably going to do a thriller or horror short film, I want to try to come up with a unique plot because most horror movies have recycled stories. If we do a thriller film then I think we could probably do something with crime. I've been interested in shows and movies about serial killers recently and I would love to do a short film about an FBI agent who's trying to solve a case or something along that storyline. If we end up doing a horror short film I know that I want to film scenes in a cemetery to make our film look realistic and give an actual scary vibe. A couple months ago my friend told me a story and I thought about how maybe I could use the story for this short film. The story would be about a guy and girl who are hanging out in their car when all of a sudden the girl sees something move behind the car through the side mirror. The girl gets really scared but doesn't say anything until her friend slowly says her name and asks if she saw the thing behind the car too. The friends begin to panic and try to drive away but the car wont start and they begin to hear noises. I think this idea could look very cool because we could use all of the mirrors in the car to see the creature behind the car. I'm not sure if we could turn this idea into a short film but I definitely want to try!

New portfolio project!

I can't believe I'm already doing another portfolio project for my AICE Media Studies class! It feels like just yesterday that I was starting my portfolio for the AS level of the class, but I'm super excited to start this one. For my senior year of high school I decided to take A level of media studies because I enjoyed AS level a lot and I know this class is gonna be super beneficial for my future career in film/media production. So far I've really enjoyed A level and I think my teacher, Mrs. Stoklosa, is preparing me for the courses that I'm going to be taking in college.

Awhile ago my class chose what option we wanted to do for the project and if we wanted to be in groups. I decided to be in a group and we chose to do a short film, and I'm super excited to film it. My partners are Kylie and Joanne and we've been thinking about what genre we want to do for our short film. I know that I want to do a thriller or horror short film and I'm pretty sure my partners are on board with that decision. My entire class knows I love horror movies so this isn't a surprise to my partners, but I know I could make our short film really good if we chose a dark genre. I've been thinking about plots for our short film and many of the movies I've watched last year and this year have inspired me. I would love to make something like the movie Hereditary because that film was a horror movie but it was done in such a unique way and it wasn't like any other horror movie I've ever seen. I also recently re watched the movies Zodiac and Nightcrawler and those movies have awakened my interest in criminology, so I would love to make the short film a crime story. I'm going to keep brainstorming, but I know I'll come up with something good!
